Mass protests in Nepal in early September 2025 were triggered by the government's indiscriminate blockage of the main social media.
These movements, mostly organized by young people and students, took the form of an ugly riot against the security agencies and came to be known as Gen Z Protests. At least 19 people were killed, hundreds were injured and the authorities were forced to cancel the ban several days later. This paper presents you with all recent and updated knowledge in plain, straightforward language.
On 4 September 2025, the Nepal government directed that 26 platforms, which included Facebook, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, Signal, and Snapchat, would be banned alleging that they had not registered themselves with the local authorities. The legal justification was that it would help to prevent hate speech, fake news, and fraud. Critics, however, regarded this as a clumsy move against free speech, more so to the political youth hot-spot of discourse.
On 8 September, tens of thousands of participants, primarily Gen Z, had amassed in Kathmandu and such cities as Pokhara, Itahari, Bharatpur and Birgunj. They wanted the ban removed and argued against the failure of governments with regard to corruption and poor governance. Protesters tried to enter the parliament which caused police to fire tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets and even live ammunition. There were at least 19 killed protesters and more than 300 injured among them including approximately 28 police officers.
On the following day, with the mounting frustration and demands of accountability, the Nepal Communication and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung declared the social media block to be lifted immediately and said that the sites had become available.
The home minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned amid the confusion with the realization of the moral heft of the deaths. Prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli gave an assurance of relief, free medical aid to the injured and compensation to families of the victims. This was announced to make sure that such violence is not repeated by appointing an investigation panel which is supposed to present these findings in not more than 15 days.
The Ban not only interrupted domestic communications but also interconnections across borders with India--breaking essential connections both to families and to tourists. In border areas such as Bhairahawa and Rupandehi a curfew was declared, a fact that frightened Indian tourists trapped in Nepal.
The UN Human Rights Office denounced the excessive use of force terming that a transparent and immediate investigation is needed. The demand for accountability was reflected by Amnesty International. Domestic leaders and specialists stressed the right to peaceful protest.
