Day 1: Nahaye Khaye (October 25, 2025)
The festival starts with Nahaye Khaye meaning Bath and Eat. The followers on this day perform holy baths in a pure river or a pond to cleanse themselves and their environment. Then they cook satvik (pure vegetarian) which does not contain onion or garlic cooked in bronze or clay pots with fresh water.
The woman worshipers (Vratis) only consume this prasad once in a day after giving the deities their portion. This is the start of the four day Chhath trip.
Day 2: Kharna (October 26, 2025)
Kharna is an observer of the Chhath Puja. This day, the strict waterless fast is observed by the devotees between sunrise and sunset. They make Rasiya Kheer (jaggery rice pudding) and chapati or puris with ghee in the evening after saying their prayers to the setting sun.
The offering is first made towards the Sun God and then given out to family and neighbours as Prasad. Once this is done, the Vratis break their fast and make ready to spend the next two primary days of Arghya.
Day 3: Sandhya Arghya (October 27, 2025)
It is the evening of the most significant festival. It is a day where believers adorn soops (bamboo baskets) with seasonal fruits, sugarcane, thekua (traditional sweet), coconut and diyas (lamps).
Devotees and their families visit the riverbanks, ponds or ghats during the setting Sun God at sunset and sing devotional Chhath songs and give Sandhya Arghya (Evening Arghya).
The moment is full of emotions, making the devotion, and being together with each other because it represents the gratitude to the Sun to be able to provide life to the world in the daytime.
Day 4: Usha Arghya (October 28, 2025)
Usha Arghya, the morning offering to the rising Sun is the last and most favorable day of Chhath Puja, when the devotees go to the water bodies early in the morning before the daylight and stand in waist-deep water awaiting the arrival of the initial rays of the morning sun.
When the sun is up, they pour Arghya (water mixed with milk) to the rising Sun as they pray to the Sun to keep their family healthy, happy and prosperous.
Upon fulfillment of the Usha Arghya, followers end the 36 hours fast with ginger water or prasad, which is the successful completion of Chhath Puja 2025.
Significance of Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja has spiritual significance because it has a relationship with nature, purity and discipline. All rituals are expressions of thanksgiving and appreciation of the natural resources water, sunlight, and air which make life on earth possible.
The Chhath is also thought to enhance the peace of mind and the physical wellbeing. It is claimed that fasting and exposure to the sun in the morning enhance the level of energy, skin and the immune system.
It is also thought that Chhathi Maiya who is a sister of Surya Dev comes to bless the worshipers with children, good health, and immunity to evil powers.
Eco-Friendly and Scientific Aspects
Chhath Puja is regarded as one of the environmentally friendly festivals in India. There is no plastic, chemicals or synthetic materials. Each and every ritual employs natural products like bamboo baskets, earthen lamps, fruits and grains.
