In this article, we will take a closer look at SEMICON India 2025 background, its significance, what to expect, and why this is of such importance to India and its future.
What is SEMICON India?
SEMICON India is an event organised and committed to the whole business all over the world focusing on semiconductors and microelectronics business. It is actually a collaboration between India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and SEMI who is an international trade association.
The event will not only gather policymakers, leaders in the global semiconductor industry, startups, researchers and innovations but will also help to enhance India as part of the global semiconductor supply chain. It identifies each step of chip production, design, manufacturing, assembly, packaging and testing.
The overall idea is to change India from a significant manufacturer of chips to a world-trusted producer and exporter of semiconductors.
When and Where is SEMICON India 2025 Happening?
Dates: 2nd to 4th September 2025
Venue: Yashobhoomi, India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC), New Delhi
Inauguration: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event on 2nd September 2025
The decision to hold it in Yashobhoomi IICC in New Delhi demonstrates the Indian aspirations on an international scale. It is amongst the largest convention centers in the Asian continent and it has world class infrastructure facilities to host such an international event.
Theme of SEMICON India 2025 – “Building the Next Semiconductor Powerhouse”
This year's central theme is on enhancing capabilities of India to emerge as the next semiconductor powerhouse in the world. The aim is not just to present the increasing prowess of India in chip design but also to demonstrate its capability of leading in chip manufacturing, packaging and in large Scale production of chips.
The theme brings to the fore the message.
The capacity of India to be a trusted supplier of global chip supply chains.
The government attempts to increase investments and skills.
A platform of startups and innovators to demonstrate new designs and technologies.
Incentives to global business to invest in Indian semiconductor undertakings.
Key Highlights of SEMICON India 2025
This edition has brought several first-time features and remarkable developments:
1. Participation from Global Leaders
Over 300 exhibitors from 18 countries are part of SEMICON India 2025. For the first time, global pavilions from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea are present, showcasing cutting-edge technologies in microchips and electronics.
2. Startup Innovation & Design Showcase
Indian startups and innovators creating in the sphere of semiconductor design have been given dedicated areas. These startups are receiving mentorship and funding opportunities, creating a strong base for future chipmakers.
3. Skilling Initiatives
Semiconductor education and the training special sessions are organized. India has the ambition of training 85,000 semiconductor professionals within the next ten years so that it can respond to the demands of the industry.
4. New Semiconductor Projects
Recently, the Government of India approved four new semiconductor manufacturing projects, worth 4,594 crore in the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab. This brings to 10 semiconductor units that have so far been approved as part of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
5. First Made-in-India Chips by 2025
The Indian Prime Minister Modi has declared that the first domestic semiconductor chips are supposed to be released by the end of 2025. This would be a milestone in Indian self reliance in technology.
India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) – Driving the Change
Launched under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is the backbone of this transformation.
The government has allocated ₹76,000 crore for developing a complete semiconductor ecosystem.
ISM supports not only manufacturing plants (fabs) but also design, R&D, testing, and packaging facilities.
Several global players are already investing in India with government support, ensuring that India reduces its reliance on imports.
The Mission is designed to make India a key player in the global electronics and semiconductor value chain.
Why is SEMICON India 2025 Important?
The importance of this event is worth more than just technology, but it has economic, strategic, and international meanings.
1. Reducing Dependence on Imports
India relies on other nations, such as Taiwan, South Korea and the US to provide it with practically every single Semiconductor. Local manufacturing will curb on expenses and guarantee safety in the supply office.
2. Boost to “Make in India”
As the government intensely promotes Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), semiconductor fabrication will enhance the stature of India as an industrialist nation.
3. Job Creation and Skill Development
It is hoped that the prospective development of the semiconductor industry will result in thousands of high-tech jobs, including chip-designers and factory technicians.
4. Strategic Importance
Semiconductors are the foundation of any modern technology- whether in smartphones, cars, defense-based equipment, satellites, AI, or 5G infrastructure. In India, the management of this technology is a case of national security, as well.
5. Positioning India as a Global Player
Holding the SEMICON India with global presence will make India the secure and trusted global chip hub when other countries across the world are de-risking their global supply chains by diversification of supply chains out of China at this time.
The Role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi
The primary Advocate has been Prime Minister Modi who has been spearheading the semiconductor aspirations of India. The first boss of SEMICON India 2025, he stressed:
India is no more a market with regard to semiconductors, but is emerging as a producer and exporter.
The government left no stones unturned to facilitate the development of this sector in terms of policy reforms, financial support, and international alliances.
By 2030, India is looking to become a major semiconductor manufacturing and innovation hub.
